In the Spotlight // Matte Liquid Lipsticks

I've been meaning to do a round-up post of my matte liquid lipsticks for the longest time (same with highlighters - I'll get to those soon!!), but I always had some excuse that I didn't have enough or I would wait until I got all the ones on my wishlist. Well, it seems like a lot of the beauty community is starting to get over the intense trend that was the liquid lip, and I think I'm among them! Don't get me wrong, I still love a good liquid lip and I have found a few really good formulas that aren't too drying but are still long lasting. But, I think I've gotten all of the ones that I've wanted and don't have an itch to check out any of the new launches (*cough* Urban Decay *cough*). So, I guess now is as good a time as any to share my collection with you guys!

L-R: Cocoa, Mulberry, African Violet, Marvelous Mauve, Lolita, Lolita II, Pin Up, Lady Balls

Cougar Beauty 24hr Liquid Lipsticks in Cocoa* and Mulberry*
I hate to start the post on a dull note, but these are possibly my least favourite of the liquid lipsticks I own! You can probably see in the swatches, they are really patchy and no amount of layering will make them look even. As well as looking dry on the lips, they felt extremely dry. Although the colours are niceish (besides the hella patchiness), I'm just not a fan and wouldn't recommend these!

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stains in African Violet and Marvelous Mauve
From worst to best it seems! I'm not sure I could choose a favourite formula, but these ones are certainly up there. I'd say these are the most comfortable - they have a slightly moussey formula that does dry down to a matte finish but still has the slightest bit of moisture to it. They aren't the most long lasting, but they certainly last well and don't patch or flake off. These are probably the ones I'd recommend first because they're really comfy but give the matte liquid lip look! Plus, they're affordable!

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks in Lolita and Lolita II
These are also up there among my favourite formulas because they're very long lasting and not too drying. These have a thinner formula so they can be a little bit patchy but a careful application and a wee bit of layering fixes that right up. These certainly dry to a transfer-proof finish and there's no tackiness whatsoever. These are a really great all rounder, my only complaint is that they are a little drying but it's nothing unbearable!

I'll be completely honest, I haven't worn this one much, but I can say the formula is quite nice. It's definitely more up the mousse street and it does dry somewhat, but there's still moisture and it can transfer. Because of that, it is really comfortable but isn't super long wearing. It does fade flatteringly though. This would be a good option for those who don't like super dry formulas that set to a concrete-matte finish.

I was really surprised by this formula! I didn't really know what to expect from this since these have sort of been getting mixed reviews, but this formula is a stunner! It's really opaque and applies really evenly - it looks super stunning and bold on the lips. It has a slightly more moussey, airy formula so it is comfortable on the lips but can be prone to transferring. That being said, it still has a very matte finish and lasts really well. This could be a contender for my favourite formula but I don't wear reds very often (if ever) so I haven't been able to give it a really fair shot. I do really want to try a nude shade from them!

L-R: Patina, Marvelous Mauve, Fiery, Lady Balls, Caramello, Times Square

I already have a full post dedicated to these with swatches, so I won't do a full write up here. I decided to swatch instead some similar shades that I have. Sephora's Marvelous Mauve is basically a perfect dupe for Patina and Fiery and Too Faced Lady Balls are super similar. If anything Fiery is a little more blue toned. Caramello and Colourpop Times Square are very different, but I thought I would swatch them next to each other just in case! I really like the formula of these Stila ones. I tend to wear these really often just because I have a bunch of shades. I find them comfortable, non-drying and long-lasting. They can feel a little bit tacky on the lips which is odd, but much better than feeling completely dry and tight!

L-R: Cheap Thrills, Kapow, Echo Park, Times Square, Honeymoon, Bedtime Flirt, Bare Attraction, Nude Allude

I also did a full post on these and it was a RANT. Firstly, I don't think I mentioned in my post but the packaging is really bad. The stopper SUCKS so the wand comes out with way too much product all the way up the stick. I also accidently was holding one of them slightly downward (not vertically down, but like a slight angle) and it fully DRIPPED out and stained my drawer! Very annoyed. Anyway, the formula between shades and even within shades varies wildly and is so inconsistent. Kapow is an absolute joke - it is SO drying like I cannot stand to have it on my lips for even a minute. Cheap Thrills is okay and I think the colour is worth it so I wear it. Times Square is the best but still drying and can look thick on the lips. I probably wouldn't recommend these and I won't be buying anymore myself!

The Ultra Satins on the other hand are much nicer. These don't dry to a fully matte finish, but they basically look matte on the lips. They have a bit of moisture to them so they don't feel drying and are really comfortable. They're surprisingly long lasting though and fade really nicely. These I definitely want more of!

NYX Lip Lingeries in Honeymoon and Bedtime Flirt
I think these are a good accessible drugstore option, but they're certainly not the best out there. I actually haven't yet worn Honeymoon (I just wanted it for that trendy, novelty greige-ness) but I can tell it's a bit patchy. I really like Bedtime Flirt but I find the key is to apply it really thinly. It then dries to a matte finish and doesn't transfer. It lasts really nicely too. I find if you apply too much, it can bunch up and get a little tacky.

L'oreal Infallible Pro Matte Glosses in Bare Attraction and Nude Allude
In hindsight I probably shouldn't have included these in this post because they're certainly not matte liquid lips, but hey ho here we are. I really like these and as oxymoronic as their name is - it's really what they are! They have a gloss like texture, but more of a moussey matte finish. They feel so airy and comfortable on the lips. They have a matte-ish finish with a slight sheen, but the sheen eventually wears away and you then have a matte lip which is super comfortable! There's not much more to say about these but they're a nice pick for a low-maintenance matte-ish lip!

So there's my full round-up! If I had to choose, my top three formulas would probably be Sephora Collection, Stila and Kat Von D. I do really liked Too Faced as well but I need to try some more shades that are more up my alley!

What are your favourite matte liquid lipstick formulas?
